Causes of Bleeding Gums

Healthy gums do not bleed. Many people struggle with this problem, but at Dr. Michael Eisenbrock’s Bensalem Family Dentistry office, we provide our patients with information on how to prevent this problem. Most of the time, the solution is better oral hygiene, but there can be compounding factors.

As plaque becomes tartar at the base of the crowns, acid sticks to it, irritating the gums. Although a professional hygienist may be needed to remove the plaque, better brushing can help alleviate the irritation. However, many people have misconceptions about what makes brushing “better.” Teeth should be brushed for two full minutes per session with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing too hard or with hard bristles bruises the gums and is another cause of bleeding.

During pregnancy, women are especially vulnerable to bleeding gums due to hormonal changes. Smokers are also at increased risk due to the toxins that build up in their mouths. People who have dry mouth or are on blood thinners also tend to experience more bleeding because they are less able to fight off the bacteria which cause tartar to build up or their gums are weaker.

Bad Oral Habits

If you suffer from sensitive teeth, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock of Bensalem Family Dentistry encourages you to review your oral hygiene habits. Additionally, bad habits such as nail biting, and opening your X-Box controller with your teeth, can be detrimental to tooth enamel. Additional bad habits that can cause sensitive teeth include the following, and we encourage you to cut back on them immediately.

  • You’re brushing too hard – over time, if you brush with too much force, you can wear down the protective layers of your teeth and expose the microscopic hollow tubes or canals that lead to your dental nerves. When these tubules are exposed, tooth sensitivity is a result.

  • You’re eating too many acidic foods – If the pathways to your nerves are exposed, acidic foods will cause you pain.

  • You have tooth decay – If you have tooth decay, it’s easy for bacteria to accumulate in these tiny crevices, which causes acid build-up and enamel breakdown.

  • You’re a tooth grinder – Grinding your teeth can wear down your enamel. This exposes the dentin and causes sensitive teeth.

Drink More Water

Fluoride is nature’s natural cavity fighter and is most commonly found in drinking water. Fluoride has the ability to promote remineralization, which aids in repairing tooth decay before it can even develop. Water also helps replenish saliva which prevents us from having dry mouth discomfort. If you need more reasons to drink water on a daily basis, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock of Bensalem Family Dentistry is here to give you a few.

Saliva is the mouth’s first defense against tooth decay and water replenishes our saliva with every sip. Water not only washes away leftover food, it helps keep your teeth strong by washing them with calcium, phosphate, and fluoride. Unlike sugary beverages that harm your oral health and damage enamel, water improves your oral health.

Sugar and Tooth Enamel

The primary cause of tooth decay is due to a lack of proper oral hygiene habits. The second culprit, however, is sugar. If you consume sugary beverages on a daily basis, these soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, and more have high acid levels that can cause tooth erosion. When these sugars are left on the teeth, they can create cavities. To keep your mouth cavity-free, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS of Bensalem Family Dentistry encourages you to limit sugar consumption.

Tooth enamel is the strongest substance in our bodies but that doesn’t mean it can’t be worn down. When sugar combines with bacteria in the mouth it produces acids that attack tooth enamel. Sugary beverages like fruit juice can be diluted with water to reduce the acidity that destroys enamel. We don’t expect you to kick the habit completely, but you’ll do your smile a favor by consuming more water or milk as these are low in acidity.

Pain around Fillings

Patients at Bensalem Family Dentistry are assured of getting high-quality fillings. This restorative procedure is an important means of preventing decay, as it stops bacteria from hiding within caries. Some sensitivity immediately after placement of an implant is normal, but if pain persists or starts again later on, it is important for the patient to come to us for help.

A high filling is one which prevents the patient from fully biting down without pain. This should not happen, and if it does, the fillings will need to be replaced with one that is a better fit. If a patient is in pain after getting a filling but is able to bite down, the decay may have already reached a deeper part of the tooth. Some materials used for fillings may also shrink, allowing bacteria to colonize the area between the filling and the sealant and continue causing decay.

Fillings do not last forever. The area around one could become painful if the seal holding the filling in place breaks. This would create another area for bacteria to hide in. To ensure that fillings never become a problem, visit us regularly and we will replace them.

When Dental Bonding Breaks

Dental bonding is beneficial for teeth that have been chipped, fractured, discolored or decayed. With proper oral hygiene, dental bonding can keep your smile looking bright for up to ten years. In the case of dental trauma, or eating too much of acidic foods, however, dental bonding may break. If you’ve completed a dental bonding procedure in the past and begin to notice a crack, visit Dr. Michael Eisenbrock of Bensalem Family Dentistry before it falls out completely.

It’s important to remember that dental bonding is not as strong as tooth’s natural enamel. Because dental bonding doesn’t provide the same strength as tooth enamel, it’s important to avoid bad habits that might make the composite resin crack. Additionally, be conscious of eating too many acidic foods, as this can damage bonding over time. Additionally, be conscious of eating too many acidic foods, as this can damage bonding over time. Hookah Tobacco and Teeth

If you are a lover of water pipes, also known as hookahs, and have been told that they aren’t as bad as cigarettes, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS of Bensalem Family Dentistry is sorry for being the bearer of bad news –you’ve been misinformed. Studies show that water pipe smoking is just as harmful as cigarettes if not more.

Hookah tobacco (shisha) is a combination of tobacco, sweetener, and fruit. Many believe that shisha is safer to smoke because it is filtered through water before being inhaled. Though it does not leave you smelling like an ashtray, it has similar health risks associated with smoking cigarettes. Smokers increase their risk of developing dry mouth, bad breath, and especially, oral cancer. The best thing you can do for your oral health is to kick the habit altogether.

If you have questions or concerns regarding how smoking affects your oral health, please give us a call. Products for Cleaning a Fixed Bridge

Those tools we give our orthodontic patients aren’t just for braces. Many patients at Bensalem Family Dentistry have benefitted from fixed bridges, but in order for their new teeth to last a life time, patients have to know how to clean them. Fortunately, there are several commonly-available items that can help.

A threader is a big loop with a pointy end which is used to draw floss in the same way a needle draws thread. Many people first learn to use it to floss around orthodontic wiring, but it also works with bridges. The patient only needs to draw the floss through the gap between the bridge and the gum line, and then they can clean the bridge and the sides of the pontic teeth. If the bridge is supported by implants, they may also be able to slide a proxy brush through the gap. Also known as Christmas tree brushes, proxy brushes are small, conical brushes which can dislodge bits of food debris.

There are also more specialized products available. Some floss manufacturers produce floss with stiffened tips which can be pushed through a bridge gap, and makers of electric tooth brushes make adjustable heads for their instruments which can clean the tips of implants. There are all sorts of options for people with bridges to maintain their oral health.

Intrinsic Stains

We treat all sorts of cosmetic problems at Bensalem Dentistry, including stains which can’t be removed with regular bleaching. Although most stains on the teeth are due to extrinsic factors, such as smoking or a lifetime of coffee, and some discoloration is due to natural wear to the enamel, there are also stains that are intrinsic to the tooth. These can be covered, but they sometimes indicate an issue that is more than just cosmetic.

The easy intrinsic stains to treat are those which are caused by the tooth having been exposed to dark molecules during its formation. Tetracycline antibiotics and excessive amounts of fluoride can cause a tooth to be black or purplish from its first appearance. But if a formally white tooth turns black, it could be because its pulp has become inflamed from trauma or infection. This will result in a serious tooth ache if we do not perform a root canal, and an infection could spread to the patient’s blood stream or cause a facial abscess. Once the root canal is complete, we can cover the tooth with a veneer or a new crown.

Clear Braces

Dr. Michael Eisenbrock and Bensalem Dentistry have an orthodontic solution for every patient, and clear braces may be the one you’re looking for.  Traditional braces are still the most common way adults and children correct their teeth. Clear aligners have become popular, but aren’t always effective for everyone.  If your orthodontic treatment requires traditional brackets and wires, clear braces use this straightening technique with materials designed to avoid the metallic look dreaded by so many patients.

Aesthetic improvements have been made to traditional braces that can achieve the same results without the metallic look.  Brackets are now available in clear and translucent forms that are designed to resist staining.  To connect these brackets, wires the color of natural teeth are used.  The final look is not totally invisible but is much more subtle than traditional silver braces and doesn’t look metallic.  Almost any orthodontic patient can achieve the same great results as traditional braces offer with a better disguise during treatment.

Water Flossing

Is flossing a part of your home oral care routine? If not, it’s time to start. Most people put flossing on the bottom of their priority list because they either disregard the importance or don’t know how to do it correctly. If you have a hard time using the floss that Dr. Michael Eisenbrock of Bensalem Family Dentistry gives you in your dental goody bag after a dental checkup, water flossing may make cleaning your teeth more fun.

Water flossing is a method that incorporates a hand-held device that removes food particles from between teeth using steady water streams. Water flossing is usually a substitute for patients who have arthritis or a condition that makes holding floss in the hands, difficult. Water flossing is also helpful for patients with braces because the water can reach into grooves where floss may not. Like traditional floss, water flossing reduces periodontal disease because it reduces inflammation around the gums. So whichever method you prefer, just be sure to have one.

If you have questions or concerns regarding water flossing, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com for more information. Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

Bensalem Dentistry sees many patients who are unhappy with their smile. The look of your smile includes your gums, and even patients without any damage to their teeth feel like their gums keep them from enjoying their best smile.  Some people naturally have more gum tissue than others and it results in a gummy smile, while others have less gum tissue that gives a look of elongated teeth.

We offer cosmetic periodontal surgery so that any patient can have their perfect smile.  Cosmetic periodontal surgery is a technical way of saying sculpting the gum line, and each procedure is different depending on the patient’s goal.  Soft tissue grafts can be placed to extend the gum line, or excess gum tissue can be removed to expose more tooth.  The result is a visually pleasing ratio of tooth to gums that creates an even smile! If you think your smile would benefit from cosmetic periodontal surgery, please contact us.

How Diet Plays into Dental Health

You are what you eat. Therefore, if your diet isn’t up to par, chances are, neither is your oral health. Oral health and nutrition go hand-in-hand and Dr. Michael Eisenbrock of Bensalem Dentistry is here to explain how. Foods that are high in carbohydrates, sugars, and starches largely contribute to the production of plaque acids that attack tooth enamel and cause decay. So if you refuse to give up your junk food, be sure that you’re visiting us at least twice a year for routine cleanings.

When it comes to your oral health, just like weight loss, your body will see positive results when the right foods are consumed. If you favor cookies, candies, and starchy snacks, make wise choices, or limit the number of snacks you eat. Foods that protect your teeth include nutritious foods such as vegetables, plain yogurt, or a piece of fruit. It also helps to drink plenty of water and (as always) brush your teeth twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste that has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance, and floss at least once a day.

If you have questions or concerns about your oral health status, please give us a call. To learn more about services we offer, visit www.bensalemdentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call 215-638-9952.

Dental Phobia

It’s one thing to avoid going to the dentist because you have a bit of anxiety, but it’s another thing to put off the health of your mouth because you have a massive phobia of the dental chair. Dental phobia is a serious condition that can leave a patient feeling panic-stricken and terrified. At Bensalem Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock promises to make you feel comfortable every step of the way, but if you suffer from this condition, you may want to discuss sedation options.

There are many reasons a person might fear the dentist. Perhaps you had a traumatizing experience as a child, or you fear the pain that a routine cleaning may cause. We understand that it’s easier said than done, but the process of dental work does not need to fill you with terror. Want to know what’s scarier than visiting the dentist? Having your teeth fall out because you never discussed your fears with your dentist. If you suffer from dental fear, no matter the severity, we encourage you to reach out to us so we can discuss your concerns. This way, you can mentally prepare for what’s to come.

If you would like to discuss your fears with our dentist, please give us a call. To learn more about services we offer, visit www.bensalemdentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call 215-638-9952.

Makeover Your Smile with Veneers

Dr. Michael Eisenbrock and the staff of Bensalem Dentistry are always answering patient’s questions about how they can improve the appearance of their smile.  There are several cosmetic procedures available to correct tooth color or alignment, but the best way to give your smile a whole new look is with veneers.  Veneers are made from a thin ceramic shell and allow you to make a dramatic change to the appearance of your smile and still look natural.

Patients with cosmetic issues like staining, cracked or chipped teeth, and even crooked teeth and small gaps can achieve a brilliant smile with veneers.  The process can even be completed in as little as two visits. First, you and your dentist will discuss the shape and look you want for your new smile.  Once your teeth are prepared for the treatment, an impression of your teeth is taken. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the custom product is made.  Ask us about options for a temporary smile to wear while your custom veneers are fabricated.  On your final visit, the veneers are bonded to the surface of your teeth for you to wear for a lifetime.

To learn more about veneers and all the services we offer, visit BensalemDentistry.com for more information.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, call 215-874-4042.

HPV and Oral Cancer Month

Oral pathology is one of our biggest concerns for our patients at Bensalem Dentistry. Because April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we want to provide up-to-date information about changes in how doctors are thinking about cancers of the mouth and throat. Last year, new oral cancer diagnoses associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV) for the first time outpaced those associated with alcohol and tobacco use.

There is no way of detecting HPV in the mouth. Even if there were, it may not be useful to do so, because there are almost two hundred strains of HPV, of which only nine are known to cause cancer and only one is known to cause throat cancer. HPV usually settles in the back of the mouth and top of the throat, a region called the oropharynx, which is difficult to observe in a way which is not extremely intrusive to the patient. Even if tissue samples were to be scraped from the throat, the tissue is so creviced that random samples would probably not catch infections.

Patients should be aware that simply because they do not smoke does not mean they are not at risk for oral cancer. They can help us catch it by requesting a screening if they notice pain, numbness, or swelling in their throat, jaw, or ears. Though oral cancer rates have risen due to HPV, the virus is treatable, which is why fatalities have continued to decline.

Dr. Michael Eisenbrock runs Bensalem Dentistry at 3554 Hulmeville Road, Suite 111, Bensalem, Pennsylvania, 19020. To schedule an appointment, call 215-874-4042 or visit BensalemDentistry.com and fill out a contact sheet.

WaterLase

Bensalem Dentistry is excited to be using the latest dental technology for our patients. WaterLase is an incredible development in the tools dentists use, and has many benefits to patients as well.  The WaterLase device uses a precise laser combined with a continual spray of water, and can be used on both hard and soft tissue (teeth and gums). When used on the gums, the WaterLase causes little to no bleeding and less swelling after the procedure. The precision that can be achieved by using WaterLase is important for your teeth as well because the laser can target only decayed tissue without compromising the healthy tooth that remains.

Patients who experience anxiety at dental appointments should also try this less invasive and virtually painless method. The WaterLase is so versatile that dentists can complete more work in a single session.  This means less anesthetic for the patient and can even eliminate the need for anesthetic in some cases.  The powerful and precise technology helps dentists achieve great results without causing trauma to the mouth, which results in less pain and recovery time for the patient. Even anxious patients can relax as the WaterLase goes to work, replacing the intimidating drill with a combination of laser and water power.

WaterLase can change the future of your dental appointments, so contact us to make that change.

Sedation Dentistry

At Bensalem Dentistry we know far too many patients put off dental work because of an anxiety or fear about the procedure. Some patients have had painful or traumatic dental appointments in the past that give them fear, and others may have sensitive teeth or a sensitive gag reflex that makes dental work dreadful. These are not reasons to put yourself at risk by leaving dental issues untreated!
We are equipped to offer sedation to anxious patients, and strive to make the process as comfortable as possible for each patient. In addition to using local anesthetic in the area of a procedure, we have the following options available for sedation:
  • ·        Nitrous Oxide, also called laughing gas, is inhaled by the patient and causes a sleepy euphoria before the patient drifts off
  • ·        Oral Conscious Sedation, or taking a sedative orally before the procedure, keeps the patient awake but they remain completely relaxed and experience no pain
  • ·        Anxiolysis, also administered by taking a pill orally, is most recommended for anxious patients
  • ·        IV Sedation delivers medicine straight into your blood stream to work quickly, and the level of sedation can be adjusted during the procedure
Bensalem Dentistry can help anyone experience anxiety-free dental appointments.

The Dangers of DIY Orthodontics

A little over a year ago, the American Association of Orthodontists issued a public service announcement regarding the dangers of do-it-yourself orthodontics. That announcement was back in the news earlier this year in the wake of a survey the Association conducted on its members which found that 13% of them had treated someone who attempted orthodontics on themselves. As providers of orthodontics at Bensalem Dentistry, we understand the complexity of misalignment corrections and wish to impress upon our patients the necessity of professional supervision.

The length of orthodontic treatment is not an attempt to milk the patient for payments. Teeth are living bones, and moving them requires them to be moved through other living bones. Shifting teeth too quickly will compromise the strength of the jawbone, leaving the teeth loose and at risk of falling out or migrating to their former position.

Many DIY substitutes for wires are also dangerous. Applying elastic bands, floss, and so forth, directly around teeth is likely to put too much pressure on them, restricting their blood supply. Without brackets, these binding materials will likely slide into the wearer’s gum pocket, requiring professional tools to remove.

The services we provide are meant to ensure a lifetime of oral health. Please visit us if you have misaligned teeth instead of doing something which will cost you much more.

Guided Canine Eruption

Orthodontics can correct numerous types of malocclusion, sparing patients discomfort and health difficulties later in life. While many people are aware that teenagers commonly have difficulty with unerupted wisdom teeth, they may not be aware of how often canine teeth get stuck. Whenever possible, we use orthodontics to guide canines into place instead of removing them.

The canine teeth are the pointy ones in between the incisors and premolars. While they are helpful for piercing foods, they are even more important for stabilizing the point of maximum change of curvature in the teeth arch. If the canines are caught completely below the gum line, incisions will be necessary to expose them before orthodontic brackets can be placed.

Because unerupted canines will be above or below the other teeth, some unusual –looking orthodontic wires are used to connect them to the other brackets. These loop-shaped wires are called ballista springs. Guiding canines into place usually takes about a year. Because adult face bones usually prevent teeth from being moved as extensively as completely unerupted canines require, it is crucial that patients receive this kind of orthodontic treatment as teenagers.

How to Care for Dentures

At Bensalem Dentistry, we are dedicated to helping our adult patients maintain their oral health as they transition through life. Receiving dentures is not a decision to be made lightly and we want to ensure our patients have an easy a time as possible adjusting by providing them with information on how they should change their hygiene habits.

Dentures should never be allowed to dry out. Keeping them in room-temperature (not hot) water or a cleaning solution overnight is necessary, but also presents its own challenges to keeping them clean. Patients must brush their entire denture, not just the parts shaped like teeth, using toothpaste specially made for dentures and a soft-bristled brush. Lacking any natural protections or the ability to repair themselves, dentures are more vulnerable than natural teeth to being scratched by minerals or hard bristles.

Taking dentures out at night will give patients’ gums a chance to relax. Before putting the dentures back in when they wake up, patients should brush their gums and tongue to prevent bacteria growth and stimulate blood flow. If they notice any problem with their dentures, they should seek repairs from a professional immediately. Patients should never attempt to adjust dentures on their own.

Dental Health and Overall Health

Your mouth is a window into what’s going on inside your body and Dr. Michael Eisenbrock of Bensalem Family Dentistry can assist you in keeping that window as clean as possible. If you have periodontal disease make sure you visit our practice frequently and get it treated promptly before it progresses to the point of tooth decay or it starts to affect your overall health. To understand how the mouth can affect the body, it helps to understand what can go wrong in the first place.

Oral health means more than just an attractive smile. Poor oral health and untreated oral diseases and conditions have a significant impact on quality of life. In many cases, the condition of the mouth mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Conditions such as periodontal (gum) disease can be precursors to scary stuff like cognitive decline, diabetes, and other systemic diseases. This is why it is important to schedule routine dental cleanings twice a year, on top of brushing and flossing at least twice a day.

If you have questions about your oral health regimen, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com for more information. Dental Bonding for Your Teeth

Tooth bonding or dental bonding uses a special tooth colored resin which is applied to the tooth then hardened using a special light. This bonds the resin to the tooth either to restore it or to improve the appearance of the tooth. Because of some of the limitations of dental bonding, some dentists view it as best suited for small cosmetic changes. Consult with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry about the best cosmetic approach for your particular problem.

Dental bonding is an option that can be considered to repair decayed, chipped or cracked teeth, to improve the appearance of discolored teeth, to close spaces between teeth, to make teeth look longer and/or to change the shape of teeth. Little advance preparation is needed for dental bonding. Anesthesia is often not necessary unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, we utilize white fillings that will closely match the color of your tooth.

If you have questions about dental bonding, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com for more information. Celery for Fresh Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common condition that affects everyone periodically. To eliminate the odor we might catch ourselves chewing a piece of minty gum on the go, or take a quick swig of mouthwash before we leave the house for a night out.  Here at Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock knows that bad breath can be very embarrassing, but did you know that you can fight it by eating a piece of celery?

Celery fights bad breath because it is rich in fiber which fights halitosis by breaking down plaque and sulfur compounds.  Therefore, celery is a great thing to eat to help clean your mouth. It is also effective to munch on a carrot or an apple. Snacks that include crispy fresh fruits and vegetables step up your saliva flow between meals to help wash away bacteria from teeth, tongue and gums that can cause bad breath. Gingivitis Risk Factors

Gingivitis – an inflammation of the gums – is the initial stage of gum disease and is the easiest to treat. If the plaque is not removed by daily brushing and flossing, it produces toxins that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis. Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry recommends scheduling professional dental checkups every six months to prevent gingivitis from occurring, however, proper oral hygiene starts at home. Be aware of these symptoms and risk factors if you notice a bit of blood in the sink when you brush.

Healthy gums are firm and pale pink. If your gums are puffy, dusky red and bleed easily, you may have gingivitis. Because gingivitis is rarely painful, it is possible to have it without even knowing it. Signs and symptoms of gingivitis include: swollen, soft, puffy, receding, or occasionally tender gums, gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss, a change in color of your gums, as well as bad breath.

If you suffer from any of the symptoms above, give us a call so we can help you stop gingivitis in its tracks. Novocain: Explained

When you think of the dentist’s office, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry is almost certain that you’re wondering about your pain-free options. Depending on the procedure at hand, you will either be given a local or general anesthetic. Local anesthesia allows the patient to remain awake, while general anesthesia allows the patient to sleep. If you are told you’ll be receiving a local anesthetic, “novocain” probably comes to mind. Novocain is commonly used to suppress pain in patients who remain conscious. During your consultation, Dr. Eisenbrock will determine if novocain is appropriate for your treatment plan as well as if it is the best option for you.

Novocain is normally injected into an area during oral surgery and other dental procedures to numb the surrounding tissues. Like any medication, however, side effects include numbness around the injection site that can last for several hours, a tingling sensation around the injection site, as well as minor swelling around or near the injection site. Novocain is a good option for some, but not for others. Be sure to provide us with as much information about your medical history as possible so that you and our doctors can make an informed decision.

Denture Pain

Denture pain typically stems from poor fitting or poorly adjusted dentures. It may also be a result of new dentures, worn over soft tissues that have not developed thick, toughened layers of protective keratin. If you are experiencing gum and mouth irritation, problems eating and speaking, mouth infections and/or dentures that move around in your mouth, give Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, of Bensalem Family Dentistry a call to discuss your treatment options.

If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. In addition, you should never experience pain when wearing your dentures. If you do experience pain from your dentures and this discomfort is not treated by speaking slowly, eating soft foods or using an adhesive, your dentures may need to be replaced. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, we have plenty of tooth-replacement options for you to choose from if dentures aren’t working out.

Inflammation and Implants

We’re proud of the work we do at Bensalem Family Dentistry installing implants. When placed and cared for properly, endosteal implants are lifelong solutions to missing teeth and strengthen patients’ jaw bones. However, implants do sometimes fail, and the most common reason for this is inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the screw or abutment. We call this peri-implantitis.

Inflammation is a sign of a bigger problem. Sometimes it is due to dental cement leaking from under an artificial crown and irritating gum tissue. But usually, it is plain old gingivitis, the inflammation of gum tissue due to infection. When the infection is allowed to progress into periodontal disease, the implant screw can become corroded, and the bone matrix which makes up the crucial fusion between metal and bone may weaken and break. In such cases, the implant would have to be removed, and a new one cannot be able to be placed until after the infection is taken care of.

It would be extremely upsetting for an implant to fail after all a patient underwent to get it. Therefore, maintaining oral hygiene is extremely important. Patients who do notice signs of inflammation near an implant should not hesitate to schedule a deep cleaning.

Partial Crowns: Inlays and Onlays

Bensalem Family Dentistry offers a variety of services meant to improve patients’ comfort, bite function, and smile. Some of these include replacing teeth with prosthetics such as implants and dentures or carrying out root canals on teeth which are severely decayed. But sometimes, the problem with a molar or premolar is simply that there is a chip or decay on the chewing surface. In these cases, we may use a partial crown, such as an inlay or an onlay.

Inlays are nestled in between the pointy cusps on the chewing teeth. Onlays replace the cusps as well as the indentations. If the tooth’s surface was damaged by periodontal disease, Dr. Eisenbrock will remove the decay while the patient is numb. Afterward, he will make an impression of the patient’s mouth, and send it to a laboratory where a custom-fitted partial crown will be manufactured. It may take about two weeks for the completed crown to be milled and returned, but once it is, it can be cemented in place during a return visit.

Usually, partial crowns are made with porcelain and match the patient’s tooth color, but there are other options. Regardless of the inlay or onlay’s construction material, patients will need to care for it with brushing, flossing, and mouthwash, just as they would for a natural tooth. If they do, it could last for decades.

Toothbrush Care

Brushing your teeth plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. Though you may not give much thought to replacing your toothbrush, appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are important considerations for maintaining a good oral hygiene regimen. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock wants to inform you how and when to replace, clean, and store your toothbrush.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. However, toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. It is also important to never share a toothbrush because this practice could be a concern for people with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases. If your toothbrush comes in contact with another, thoroughly rinse the brush with warm tap water to remove any remaining toothbrush and debris. When you are done using the toothbrush, store it in an upright position and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

Tooth Decay Prevention

Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Hundreds of different types of bacteria live on our teeth, gums, tongue and other crevices in the mouth. Some are helpful, but some can be harmful such as those that play a role in the tooth decay process. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, we want our patients to know that good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay.

When a tooth is exposed to acid frequently – for example, if you frequently eat foods or drinks containing sugar and starches – the repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. This will cause a white spot to appear if the minerals have been lost. When this happens, this is a sign of early decay.

You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:
  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking.
  • Visit us for professional cleanings and oral examination.

The Process of a Root Canal

Root canals used to get a bad reputation, but fortunately, these days they are no more uncomfortable than a simple cavity filling. At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we want our patients to be aware of the root canal procedure so that maybe it will seem less frightening.

Root canal therapy is started by your dentist drilling an access hole in the tooth. Through this hole, the dental pulp is reached where a file is used to clean out the infected tissue and scrub the root canal clean. The open space is then filled with a sealant called gutta-percha. When the process is complete, a filling is placed onto the access hole. This process restores the tooth to a healthy state so it can continue to function and serve a long life.

When a tooth is infected, it can cause great pain. The infection can also spread and become dangerous, especially to those with a weakened immune system. Infection can lead to an abscessed tooth and eventually loss of the tooth.

If you are experiencing continuous pain to a tooth, be sure to come in for an examination. To learn more about root canals, call Bensalem Family Dentistry at (215) 638-9952 or visit our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com.

Dental Benefits of Xylitol

Tooth decay happens when bacteria in your mouth consume the sugars we eat. When we eat food containing ordinary table sugar (sucrose), it gives bacteria on your teeth energy to thrive, allowing them to multiply and start making acids that can eat away the enamel on teeth. This “acid attack” causes the tooth decay process. This is when xylitol comes in to save the day. Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants and Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry wants you to learn all about it.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute that can be found in gum, mints, or candy. It can also be found in dental products such as toothpaste and mouthwash. Aside from slowing down the tooth decay process, dental benefits of xylitol also include a decrease of bacteria. Xylitol enhances the remineralization of teeth, particularly in small decay spots just developing in the tooth enamel. So the next time you decide to sweeten your coffee or tea with some sugar, consider investing in some cavity-prevention xylitol.

How Does Invisalign Move Teeth?

Straighter teeth give you a greater smile, but if you’re an adult, you probably don’t want to sport a mouth full of metal. Fortunately, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry offers Invisalign to patients who want to straighten their smile discreetly. Invisalign can address many orthodontic issues while offering exceptional results using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. But how do they move your teeth? Allow us to explain.

Depending on your individualized treatment plan that Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS maps out for you, you will be given a specific number of aligner trays. When an aligner is worn, its “ill-fitting” region will apply a constant, gentle pressure to the teeth it encases. This pressure will gradually guide your teeth into an aligner that perfectly matches the aligners shape. As evidence of the movement it generates, you should notice a more relaxed fit and less pressure on your teeth. Each aligner straightens your teeth little-by-little until treatment is complete.

If you desire a straighter smile, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. The Dental Implant Process

For a tooth replacement option that never needs to be replaced, Bensalem Family Dentistry trusts dental implants. We are able to install them in patients with missing teeth right here in our Bensalem, PA dental practice.

Dental implants are able to last a lifetime with good care. The great thing is they do not need to be treated any differently than a normal tooth to keep them healthy. You just need to brush them two to three times per day and floss once per day. You will also want to make sure you are coming into our office for your routine cleanings and examinations.

The installation of a dental implant is a surgical procedure. First, an incision will be made so the titanium implant post can be inserted into the bone socket. A hole is drilled into the bone and the implant post is inserted. The gums are then sealed and allowed to heal for several months. When the healing process is complete, the gums are opened back up and an abutment is attached to the dental implant. The abutment will serve as the base for the permanent crown that will be attached. After the permanent crown is cemented into place, the process is complete.

If you are looking for the tooth replacement option most similar to your real tooth, a dental implant is your solution. The Dangers of Dental Plaque

Plaque develops when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), such as milk, soft drinks, and candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result which can destroy tooth enamel over a period of time. If you don’t brush and floss your teeth on a regular basis, this plaque can mineralize and turn into tartar which only Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry will be able to remove.

If left untreated, plaque buildup can lead to gum disease (gingivitis) which causes the gums to be swollen and inflamed. They can also bleed and if this progresses, severe periodontal disease (periodontitis) can develop. This happens when the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, allowing the bacteria to destroy the underlying bone supporting the teeth. To keep plaque under control schedule professional cleanings on a regular basis in addition to brushing and flossing.

The Purpose of Dentures

Dentures are removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and help restore your smile. If you are missing teeth and want to avoid an invasive form of treatment such as dental implants, then dentures might be the correct option for you. If you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay, or injury, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry can help reinstate your grin.

When you lose all of your teeth, facial muscles can sag, making you look older. Dentures can help fill out the appearance of your face and profile. They can also be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that your appearance does not change too much. There are different types of dentures that we can suggest depending on your individual case, however, it’s important to know that new dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them.
