Flossing with Braces

As Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry will tell you, flossing can be difficult when you have traditional metal braces, but it’s more important than ever to keep the gaps in your teeth clean when you have a mouth full of metal. Many folks who have braces don’t know how to floss with them or think that they can’t floss at all if they have braces and this is not true. Therefore, here are some tips for flossing effectively and keeping those brackets and wires clean.

  • Use waxed floss, because unwaxed floss is more likely to get caught and shred in your braces.

  • Use about 18 inches of floss and thread it carefully.

  • Take the floss and gently thread it under the main wire of the braces before passing it between two teeth. Then remove the floss and re-thread it under the main wire to pass between the next pair of teeth.

  • Be sure not to snap the floss. Simply move the floss up and down carefully against the side of each tooth.

Options for Braces

When it comes to orthodontics, it is nice to have options. With the advanced technology these days, braces are faster, more comfortable, and even less noticeable. For our patients who are interested in straightening their teeth, we here at Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA offer traditional and clear braces.

Traditional braces these days are made from metal alloys derived from the space program. These metals create the strongest braces there has even been and allow for faster movement of teeth. They are also the smallest braces have even been, which makes them more comfortable.

Clear braces are also an option here at Bensalem Dentistry. The brackets are made of translucent ceramic, so they blend in with your teeth. These are great for patients who do not want braces to be as noticeable. The ceramic brackets are also stain resistant, so with good care, they will not discolor during your treatment.

Both types of braces work by attaching brackets to the front of the teeth and placing a wire in them. The wire applies continuous pressure on the teeth, which gradually moves them into place. You will visit about once per month to make sure the process is going as planned, and the wires will be changed out periodically.

If you are dreaming of a straightened smile, come in for a consultation to see if you are a candidate for braces. To schedule, call Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA at (215) 638-9952.  For more information, visit our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com
