Natural-Looking and Strong Dental Bonding

Chipped or cracked teeth can hurt and also cost you your self-esteem. Fortunately, there is an affordable and trustworthy solution. At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we offer dental bonding; a strong restoration option that is able to resemble your actual tooth.

Dental bonding is the process of using a composite resin to smooth over imperfections like chips, cracks, gaps, misalignments, and discoloration. It restores the strength of your tooth while repairing the look of your smile. The resin will be chosen in the shade that matches your tooth so it looks completely natural. For those who want to use bonding to whiten their smile, a resin is chosen in a lighter shade and then applied over the whole smile. For cracks, chips, misaligned teeth, gaps, and more, the resin is smoothed over the imperfection. The resin is then hardened and polished so that it shines like a natural tooth. Only light etching is needed to prepare the tooth for the resin, so there are no major changes to your tooth.

While keeping your natural teeth intact is ideal, life does not always allow that. Our strong and natural-looking dental bonding is able to bring back your smile and the function of your teeth. To schedule an appointment with Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952. More information about us can be found on our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

Avoid Uneven Staining After Braces

Braces come with a little extra work but they end result is worth it! Straight teeth are both aesthetically pleasing and healthy! Speaking of a little extra work, Bensalem Family Dentistry of Bensalem, PA wants to remind our patients to take special care avoiding staining while you wear your braces. Staining while wearing braces could result in uneven marks when the braces come off.

Avoid Darker Foods and Drinks

In order to avoid staining, it just makes sense to avoid the foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. Cola, coffee, tomato sauce, and blueberries are among these types of foods. While it is not always easy to cut these foods out, enjoying them sparingly will help keep your teeth white. Also, be sure to rinse after you do consume any dark foods and drinks.

Do Not Skip Brushing and Flossing

Brushing and flossing are large parts of keeping away staining. If plaque or tartar sit on the teeth for long enough, the surface of your teeth can become stained and it can even go below your tooth’s enamel. Since plaque forms on teeth just hours after brushing, it is important to brush two to three times per day. Brushing after meals is a good idea.

Utilize Special Tools

There are special dental tools on the market to help those who are wearing braces. Floss threaders help you get the floss over and under your wires easily and quickly. There are also interdental cleaners for scrubbing around your brackets.

Avoid uneven staining by following these tips! To schedule your next cleaning at Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952. For more information about our practice, visit our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

No matter how much you diligently brush or floss your teeth at home, harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that can only be removed by a dental professional. These bacteria can cause gum disease and significantly affect your overall health. Here at Bensalem Family Dentistry, our hygienists will use professional tools to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria build-up that you are unable to efficiently remove yourself.

The professional dental cleaning reinforces the home-care oral health regimen of brushing and flossing and gives Dr. Michael Eisenbrock an opportunity to locate areas in the mouth that may need special attention. During a teeth cleaning, our hygienists will thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. Once the surfaces are smooth, polishing is done using a slow speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Last but not least, the dentist flosses every crevice between your teeth and may apply fluoride if needed.

If you need your teeth cleaned don’t wait any longer, call us today so we can help you maintain a healthy smile! Cleaning Your Dental Implant

Dental implants are a very common procedure to replace missing teeth. Implants are replacement tooth roots that provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. Because the implant is secured within the jawbone, cleaning your dental implant is critical to avoid infection. Here at Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock will discuss implant maintenance care once the implants are placed.

Cleaning implant-supported tooth replacements are just as important as cleaning natural teeth, as both depend on healthy surrounding tissues for support. To ensure that the implant lasts as long as they should, some special techniques and efforts are required to keep the implant clean and free of dental plaque. Dental plaque has the ability to cause infection in the tissues around the implant which will lead to its ultimate failure. Dental implants require the same care as real teeth, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups.

During your professional cleaning, our dental hygienists play an important role in keeping your dental implant infection free. Senior Teeth Care

No matter what age you are, teeth can last a lifetime with proper home care and regular dental checkups. However, as we grow older, certain health concerns earn our full attention, especially the importance of oral health for seniors. Facts about Fluoride

Fluoride is a natural mineral found throughout the earth’s crust and widely distributed in nature and is often added to water to help reduce tooth decay. Research has shown that fluoride not only reduces cavities in children and adults, but it also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay, even before the decay is visible. Here at Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS can discuss professional fluoride treatments with you to see if you are a prime candidate.

When fluoride reaches your teeth, it is absorbed into the enamel. Fluoride helps to repair the enamel by replenishing the lost calcium and phosphorus to keep your teeth hard through a process called remineralization. When fluoride is present during this process, the minerals deposited into the tooth enamel help strengthen your teeth and prevent dissolution during the next demineralization phase. The results are stronger tooth enamel and a cavity-free grin.

If you would like to discuss your fluoride treatment options, please give us a call. Advantages of Teeth Whitening

How many of us get a confidence boost when a stranger gives us a compliment? Have you ever paid attention to how much of a positive effect this has on your self-esteem? The same applies to teeth whitening. Teeth-whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color if you would like. Here at Bensalem Family Dentistry Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS can help you do just that.

With all of the lifestyle habits and environmental factors that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leave them a little dull. Fortunately, through our tray whitening system, your pearly whites can revive their shine. In addition, teeth-whitening can also take years off of your appearance. This is because as we age, over time, our teeth darken and can become yellow, brown, or even develop a green or gray tint (which may be due to heredity and/or eating habits). Your smile speaks volumes about who you are and leaves an everlasting impression, so it’s only natural that you want it to be as radiant as possible.

If you would like to discuss your teeth whitening options, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visitwww.bensalemfamilydentistry.com for more information. How to Choose Mouthwash That Meets Your Needs

Mouthwash or rinses are used for a variety of reasons: to freshen breath, to help prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque, to prevent or reduce gingivitis, to reduce the speed that tartar forms on the teeth, or to produce a combination of these effects. Mouthwash has a few beneficial properties and Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry would like to explain some of them.

  • Antimicrobial agents act directly on oral bacteria to help reduce plaque, decrease the severity of gingivitis and control bad breath.

  • Fluoride helps reduce tiny lesions (tooth decay) on tooth enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay.

  • Astringent salts can serve as temporary deodorizers that mask bad breath.

  • Odor neutralizers act by chemically inactivating odor causing compounds.

Foods You Should Avoid if You Have TMJ/TMD

If you’ve been diagnosed with a TMJ disorder, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Family Dentistry wants to assure that you are free of pain at all times. If you have TMJ/TMD you may want to avoid certain types of foods that may be making your condition worse. We don’t recommend making any drastic changes, but we do suggest incorporating softer foods into your diet. TMJ is a chronic condition that requires self-care measures.

The constant motion of your jaw can aggravate your joint pain when chewy foods are a staple of your diet. This is because your jaw works overtime when you consume chewy foods such as caramel, taffy, chewing gum and tougher cuts of meat and fish (lobster). Types of food to avoid include chewy snacks, fatty foods, and foods that are cut into large pieces. To summarize, any type of food that allows you to open your mouth wide or chew for long periods of time may aggravate your TMJ. Instead, we recommend incorporating more soft foods into your diet, such as cooked veggies, soft bread, and yogurt.

If you suffer from constant jaw aches and pains, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com for more information. Athletes and Mouth Guards

Mouth guard use has been shown to reduce the risk of sport-related dental injuries. Imagine playing a sport that you love, when suddenly a tooth gets knocked out. Smiling, talking and eating would be difficult and it would probably take you some time to recover. When it comes to protecting your mouth, a mouth guard is an essential piece of athletic gear that should be part of your standard from an early age. Fortunately, at Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock can provide athletic patients of all ages with custom-fitted mouth guards for proper protection.

Custom mouth guards are made from exact and precise models of an individual’s own teeth. They are also made of resilient and tear-resistant materials ensuring a proper fit. A properly fitted mouth guard absolutely must be protective, comfortable, resilient, tear resistant, odorless, tasteless, and allow room for you to breathe. Because our custom-fitted mouth guards are made for your mouth and your mouth only, they are more reliable than over-the-counter mouth guards.

If you know an athlete who may benefit from a mouth guard, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com for more information. Bruxism Causes and Treatment

Do you ever wake up from a night’s sleep with sore teeth and jaws? You could be grinding your teeth. The medical term for occasional teeth grinding is called bruxism and although this condition does not usually cause harm, when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged and other oral health complications can arise. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock may recommend a night guard to provide you with relief.

Stress, anxiety, smoking, heavy alcohol, caffeine, depression and sleep disorders are all possible causes of teeth grinding. Treatment for teeth grinding depends on the cause. In some cases, chronic teeth grinding can result in fracturing, loosening or loss of teeth. The purpose of a night guard is to protect your teeth and jaws. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, if you require a night guard we will custom make them just for you.

If you believe you have bruxism, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Advantages of Invisalign Over Braces

Most patients know that there are two major ways to straighten teeth, but do you know the differences? Invisalign has many advantages over traditional metal braces. At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we want our patients to know why Invisalign is often preferred to braces and how it can help them!

Hygiene Stays the Same

With braces, your dental hygiene practices get a little more complicated and it takes more time than normal. With Invisalign, there is no need for special dental equipment or extra time. Since you take the aligners out to brush and floss, dental hygiene remains how it always has been.

No Food Restrictions

You also take Invisalign out to eat. Therefore, you do not need to steer clear of certain types of food. You can still eat crunchy, hard, or chewy foods all you like. With braces, these types of food could damage the braces and slow down treatment time.

A Clear Smile

A huge aesthetic advantage over braces is the near invisibility of Invisalign. Most people cannot tell you are wearing the aligners unless they are really looking closely. You can also take them out for important pictures like yearbook pictures or wedding pictures.

Less Gum Irritation

Invisalign consists of smooth, clear plastic aligners, so it does not rough up cheeks and gums like metal brackets and wires do.

Straightening your smile doesn’t have to mean having a metal mouth, the irritation of braces, or major changes to your day. To learn more about Invisalign, contact Bensalem Family Dentistry of Bensalem, PA by calling (215) 638-9952 or visit our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com.

Tips for Getting Kids Interested in their Dental Care

Great dental health begins as a child. That is when many habits are picked up. In addition, healthy baby teeth are important for adult teeth. For tips on getting kids interested in dental care, keep reading! At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we want all of our patients to benefit from good at-home dental care.

Educate Them

Many children will do great once they know the reasoning behind good dental care. Animated dental videos are both educational and fun to watch for kids. They will then know all about how brushing and flossing help keep away cavities.

Let Them Pick

When picking up dental supplies for your child, bring them along so they can pick. There are many toothbrushes with their favorite characters. There is even fun-flavored toothpaste and floss. Letting them pick may get them more excited about it.

Reward Good Behavior

Many kids respond well to rewards. A chart may be helpful to keep track of brushing before bed. After so many nights in a row, you can take them to the park or let them choose dinner. It’s great for getting kids into good habits. Rewards for healthy reports from the dentist can also make kids with dental anxiety feel better about dental visits.

Good dental habits start at a young age. To schedule your child’s next cleaning and examination, call Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA at (215) 638-9952. More information about our office can be found on our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

Foods to Eat with TMJ Disorder

If you suffer from a TMJ disorder, you may notice a clicking or a popping in your jaw when you try to eat your favorite foods. This is because symptoms of TMJ disorder can include jaw discomfort and tenderness or pain when opening or closing the mouth. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS doesn’t want you to live on a soft diet, but incorporating soft foods into your diet may alleviate your discomfort.

Soft foods give your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal. Some excellent (and healthy) foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and yogurt. If you must eat food that requires a heavy amount of chewing, we recommended chopping it up into small pieces. If you have a sweet tooth, soft cakes, cobblers and cheesecake are good things to choose from.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a chemical compound with the formula N20. At room temperature, it is a colorless, non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS only administers this pain relieving formula to eligible patients.

Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry. It is administered by having the patient inhale the gas, which is carefully monitored by Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS. You will fall into a euphoric state and feel completely relaxed. All feelings of fear and anxiety fade away, leaving you to sit back peacefully while your dental procedure is performed. In most cases, all dental work can be completed in one visit while you are sedated. Once the procedure is over, the nitrous oxide will wear off fairly quickly and you will probably be able to drive yourself home and return to your daily activities.

If you have questions about our sedation options, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call us at 215-638-9952.

Foods for a Healthy Smile

At some point in your life, you have probably heard that sugar will rot your teeth out. Well, sugar does lead to decay; however, there are some foods that are actually good for your teeth! At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, healthy teeth are our top priority. Keep reading to learn more!

Crunchy fruits and veggies like cucumbers and apples help clean teeth as you eat them. The fibrous foods scrape against your teeth and remove plaque! If you can’t reach for a toothbrush after lunch, reach for some cucumbers!

By now, most of us have probably heard that milk is great for strong bones. Well, the same goes for teeth. Calcium in milk keeps teeth strong and healthy. In addition, milk lowers the levels of acid in your mouth, further protecting teeth and gums. Cheese creates similar results.

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are great for your gums. They strengthen the blood vessels and connective tissues that connect your teeth to your jaw. They also reduce inflammation. Just be careful, acidic foods should be eaten in moderation. The acid can actually harm your teeth if eaten too often.

Foods that contain polyphenols like cranberries and tea prevent plaque from growing and sticking to teeth. Less plaque means less risk for cavities!

At-home care is essential for a healthy mouth, but do not forget about your dental appointments! To schedule an appointment at Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952 or visit our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

The Health Benefits of Straight Teeth

Straight teeth not only look great, but they are also great for your dental health. At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we want our patients to know the numerous health benefits of straight teeth.

Straight teeth decrease risk of injury and wear-down. Abnormal tooth wear can happen when teeth rub together where they should not. This can lead to worn down tooth enamel, sensitivity, cavities, and damage. Poorly positioned teeth can also cause cuts to the lips, tongue, or cheeks during injury. In addition, gaps can also lead to more injury to the gums. While biting, chewing, and cleaning your teeth, the gums that are left more open due to gaps are more vulnerable to being poked, scraped, or cut. When teeth are aligned properly, they protect the gums and the gums are allowed properly support the teeth.

Teeth that are crowded or gapped often create hiding places for bacteria and other debris. Even with routine brushing and flossing, these hard-to-reach spaces can be missed. When bacteria become built up, it can lead to gum disease and decay. Gum disease is bad for your oral and overall help.

Straight teeth create a beautiful smile and they promote health! To schedule an appointment at Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952. More information about our orthodontic options can be found on our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

Flossing with Braces

As Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry will tell you, flossing can be difficult when you have traditional metal braces, but it’s more important than ever to keep the gaps in your teeth clean when you have a mouth full of metal. Many folks who have braces don’t know how to floss with them or think that they can’t floss at all if they have braces and this is not true. Therefore, here are some tips for flossing effectively and keeping those brackets and wires clean.

  • Use waxed floss, because unwaxed floss is more likely to get caught and shred in your braces.

  • Use about 18 inches of floss and thread it carefully.

  • Take the floss and gently thread it under the main wire of the braces before passing it between two teeth. Then remove the floss and re-thread it under the main wire to pass between the next pair of teeth.

  • Be sure not to snap the floss. Simply move the floss up and down carefully against the side of each tooth.

If you have traditional braces and need assistance with your oral hygiene routine, don’t hesitate to call us. Tender Teeth Habits

If you avoid eating cold foods or drinking hot beverages because your teeth are a little tender, it may be time to get to the root of this problem. If you have sensitive teeth, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry may recommend dental sealants or fluoride treatments to decrease sensitivity. Sometimes the solution is simply breaking bad habits. If you catch yourself performing any of the following habits, do your best to cut them out.

  • You’re brushing too hard – over time, if you brush with too much force, you can wear down the protective layers of your teeth and expose the microscopic hollow tubes or canals that lead to your dental nerves. When these tubules are exposed, tooth sensitivity is a result.

  • You’re eating too many acidic foods – If the pathways to your nerves are exposed, acidic foods will leave you in pain.

  • You have tooth decay – If you have tooth decay, it’s easy for bacteria to accumulate in these tiny crevices, which causes acid build-up and enamel breakdown.

  • You’re a tooth grinder – Grinding your teeth can wear down your enamel. This exposes the dentin and causes sensitive teeth.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Choosing a Healthy Toothpaste

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your health. You want to be sure that you are using toothpaste that will benefit your teeth, not harm them. Bensalem Family Dentistry of Bensalem, PA wants to inform our patients of what to look for in healthy toothpaste.

A great way to ensure you are using a healthy and effective toothpaste is to look for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval. There are many different types of toothpaste like whitening toothpaste, tartar control, toothpaste for sensitivity, and more. The ADA will make sure the ingredients are safe and beneficial.

When looking for toothpaste that will whiten your teeth, it is especially important that you look for the ADA seal. Whitening toothpastes contain abrasive ingredients that polish the stains from your teeth. Too much of this ingredient can wear down your enamel.

When looking for toothpaste that helps with sensitivity, look for one with potassium nitrate or strontium chloride. When used consistently for at least a month, it can lessen the feeling of sensitivity.

The most important ingredient in toothpaste is fluoride, which is the anti-cavity property. All toothpaste accepted by the ADA has fluoride in it.

In addition to having a great at-home oral care plan, routine visits to your dentist are important for dental health. To schedule an appointment with Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952. More information about us can be found on our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

Tips for a Camera-Ready Smile

With selfies and instant photo sharing taking over the internet, your smile should always be ready for the camera. Though sometimes, our smile may not always be as white as we wish. Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry recommends visiting his office twice a year to make sure your mouth is healthy, but if you desire a little smile enhancement in between appointments, we offer cosmetic treatments to make those pearly whites a little whiter. Meanwhile, follow these tips to show off the smile you have!

  • Be natural – when it’s picture time, smile gently. That way, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth opens slightly, and your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth.

  • Check your teeth and gums – getting your smile camera-ready sometimes calls for a little behind the scenes prep work. If your pearly whites have yellowed with age, try an over-the-counter whitening product or pay us a visit! Also, don’t forget about taking care of your gums. They play a critical role in your nice smile. So keep them in good shape by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash every day.

  • Practice – your perfect smile may not happen overnight, but if you have a big photo event like a wedding or a graduation coming up, it doesn’t hurt to try out your grin in front of the mirror!

If you wish to enhance the appearance of your smile, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, DDS at Bensalem Family Dentistry may need to perform a tooth extraction. A very common reason involves a tooth that is too badly damaged, from trauma or decay, to be repaired. Wisdom teeth removal is the most common type of tooth extraction because these teeth can easily become infected if they do not emerge properly. Aside from wisdom teeth removal, other reasons for extractions may include:

  • Severe tooth damage/trauma – some teeth have such extensive decay and damage (broken or cracked) that repair is not possible.

  • Orthodontic treatment – people getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for teeth that are being moved into place.

  • Some teeth may need to be extracted if they have the potential of becoming infected.

  • Extra teeth – extra teeth may block other teeth from erupting, therefore, will require extraction.

If you are experiencing tooth pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Dental Emergencies

Our staff at Bensalem Family Dentistry understands that accidents happen. However, knowing what to do when a dental emergency occurs can decipher between saving a tooth and losing one. Any dental emergency like an injury to the teeth or gums can be potentially serious and should not be ignored. If left untreated, your risk of permanent damage, as well as the need for expensive treatment in the future may increase.

When you have a dental emergency it’s important to visit us as soon as possible. Meanwhile, here are some tips for handling common dental emergencies.

  • For a knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it between your cheek and gums, or use a tooth preservation product that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.

  • For a cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area.

  • If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.

  • For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between teeth.

Different Types of Teeth

As humans, we are made up of many different parts and the same goes for are our teeth. If we didn’t have teeth, we wouldn’t be able to chew the food that nourishes our body and allows us to function on a daily basis. If you’ve ever wondered why all of your teeth are different shapes and sizes, our staff at Bensalem Family Dentistry would like to explain why this is.

According to the American Dental Association, each tooth is made up of several parts: pulp, cementum, dentin, and enamel. The types of teeth and their functions are as follows:

  • Incisors – located at the front of the mouth, these teeth have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting or shearing food into small chewable pieces.

  • Canines – located at the ‘corners’ of the dental arches, these teeth have a sharp pointed biting surface. Their function is to grip and tear food.

  • Premolars – Unlike incisors and canines, these teeth have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food.

  • Molars – The molars are the largest teeth in the mouth and they too have a large flat biting surface. The function of these is perhaps the strongest of all as they chew, crush, and grind food.

How Teeth Discolor

Having a bright, white smile is something so many of us desire. While there are ways to achieve this goal, it is helpful to know how teeth darken or turn yellow. At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we want our patients to know how it happens to be better aware of the causes in their life.

When teeth gain surface stains, they should be removed as soon as they are noticed. This can be difficult as many surface stains develop over time. However, when the stains penetrate the enamel, they reach the dentin. When the dentin is discolored, it tends to darken the outside of the whole tooth or turn the tooth that yellowish color.

Surface stains may be caused by many things; however, proper dental hygiene is a huge part of it. Plaque can trap in stain-causers close to the teeth. This is why it is important to brush two or three times per day.

Certain foods, drinks, and other habits can stain teeth more than usual. Dark drinks like cola, coffee, and tea can darken teeth if consumed frequently. Dark foods like blueberries and soy sauce can have the same effect. In addition, smoking and other tobacco use can also stain teeth. To help minimize staining, rinse your mouth out after consuming dark food and drinks, and brush after thirty minutes. As for smoking and other tobacco use, quit!

Just by cutting out stain-causing habits, you can brighten up your smile. Choosing the Right Toothbrush for You

Choosing the right toothbrush could mean the difference between enjoying your nighttime routine or not. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, we know that every patient in our Bensalem, PA dentistry is different. That is why we want to give guidelines for picking out the right toothbrush for you.

Let’s start with the grip. Grip is important for being able to maneuver the toothbrush around your mouth. Thicker toothbrushes and especially ones with non-slip grips are best. Next, the size of your toothbrush’s head is also very important. You want to pick a smaller one so that you can fit it around your whole mouth. Bigger toothbrush heads make it difficult to reach every surface of your teeth.

Studies have shown that manual toothbrushes do just as good of a brushing job as electric ones do, however, for those who have difficulty using their hands, an electric toothbrush may help them get a better cleaning. For instance, those with arthritis who cannot twist and grip as easily anymore may not be able to scrub their teeth the best. An electric toothbrush basically does all the work. You just need to hold it in position. In addition, electric toothbrushes often have timers.

For kids, there are a ton of toothbrushes that have their favorite cartoon character on them. There are also ones that play music. These functions get kids excited about brushing their teeth.

Gum Disease and Its Stages

Gum disease can be detrimental to oral and overall health. While it should be taken seriously, gum disease is completely avoidable. Bensalem Family Dentistry of Bensalem, PA wants their patients to know about the stages of gum disease and why it is important to keep it away.

Gum disease has two primary stages; gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the first stage. This is characterized by red, irritated gums that can be puffy and can sometimes bleed easily. Gingivitis is often cured simply by having a great dental cleaning and then continuing great oral care at home. If left untreated, however, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a much more serious stage of gum disease. Periodontitis can create bleeding, red or purple, painful gums. They can begin to recede and create loose teeth. In addition, periodontitis can create chronic bad breath, a bad taste in the mouth, and pus in between the teeth and gums. Periodontitis is treated with scaling and planing, cleanings, and possibly gum surgery. Often, the receded gums will need to be fixed so that additional bacteria cannot reach between the gums and the teeth. Without treatment, periodontitis will result in lost teeth and a spread of infection. Periodontitis also increases the risks of heart attack and stroke.

In order to keep your gums healthy, brush twice daily and floss once daily. In addition, schedule your routine visits to your dentist for a cleaning and examination. Brushing and Flossing with Braces

Brushing and flossing are essential for a healthy mouth. When wearing braces, brushing and flossing can be a little more complicated, but it is still very important. At Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we want our patients to be aware of how to brush and floss while wearing braces. Following these steps will ensure you have a healthy and stain-free smile when your braces come off!

To begin brushing, brush the chewing surfaces of your teeth and the insides as you normally would. Next, brush along the tops and bottoms of all of the brackets. Plaque can build up around the brackets which can lead to strange stains and more cavities.  Make sure you are also still hitting your gum line, but do so gently. The next step is to take an interdental cleaner and scrub the sides of your brackets. This little, tree-like brush is able to get beneath the wire; so no spots are missed!

To floss, you will find that it is easiest if you use a floss threader. There are flexible, usually plastic tools that basically work like a needle and thread. They help you get the floss under your wires and back out more quickly. Floss threaders are usually found where most dental supplies are sold.

In addition to keeping your teeth clean at home, coming in for your professional dental cleanings is just as important. To schedule your appointment with Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952. For more information, visit our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

Benefits of a Tongue Scraper

It’s no surprise that the surface of the tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria. What you may not realize is that if you’ve ever looked in the mirror and seen a white film on your tongue, the organisms that you see can cause infections in the teeth and gums and are responsible for bad breath. Bad breath can have a huge negative impact on a person’s life, relationships, and self-esteem if left untreated. This is why Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Family Dentistry recommends incorporating a tongue scraper into your oral hygiene routine if you haven’t done so already.

Tongue scrapers, which are available in most drugstores in various shapes and sizes, have been promoted as a way to reduce or eliminate bad breath entirely. To use this device, you place the tongue scraper at the back of your tongue and gently bring it forward along your tongue, repeating as often as needed. If you have a coated tongue – a buildup of debris, bacteria and dead cells on your tongue – tongue scraping might be helpful. However, it’s important to practice good dental hygiene overall, by brushing your teeth and tongue at least twice a day, and flossing at least once a day. In addition, don’t forget to schedule professional cleanings and oral exams twice a year.

If you have questions regarding your oral hygiene routine, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Sensitive Teeth and How to Avoid Them

Sensitive teeth can be a real bother, especially during the colder weather. Sensitive teeth can be a sign of tooth decay or gum disease, but it could also be much simpler than that. That is why it is our goal here at Bensalem Family Dentistry to inform patients of why their teeth might be sensitive and how to avoid it.

Sensitive teeth can sometimes be a warning signal that you have a cavity, an infection, or gum disease. If you have consistently sensitive or painful teeth, it is a good idea to see your dentist. Additional warning signs include red, irritated gums and a dark spot on a tooth.

Sensitive teeth are also commonly caused by tooth abrasion. Tooth abrasion can be caused by many different things including brushing too hard, brushing too soon, acidic foods, and teeth grinding. When the enamel wears down, the dentin is exposed. The dentin has tiny nerve tubes that lead to the nerves in the center of the teeth.

To avoid wearing away your enamel, it is important to brush lightly and at least thirty minutes after you eat. The acid in our foods softens our enamel and when we brush too soon, the enamel gets brushed away. In addition, frequently eating acidic foods like pop, fruit, or candy can cause enamel to erode. You should also be aware of if you are grinding your teeth at night. Wearing a mouth guard is a good defense against the damage grinding can do.

If you are experiencing sensitive teeth, a simple habit change may be all that is in order. To schedule an appointment with Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at 215) 638-9952. To learn more, visit our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com

Calming Kids' Dental Fears

There are many children who are afraid of the dentist. This childhood fear also sometimes sticks around for adulthood, too. At Bensalem Family Dentistry, in Bensalem, PA, we want all of our patients to enjoy their experience. This is why we want to give tips for calming dental fear in kids.

Kids who start going to the dentist at an early age are usually more accustomed to the process. Kids should start seeing the dentist as soon as they have their first tooth, or at least by the age of one. Kids who do go to the dentist at an early age will become familiar with the visits and will feel more relaxed.

Parents can also help their kids become used to the process. Have your child sit back in a chair or couch and open wide. Look in their mouth and count each tooth you see. This helps little kids know how things will go and feel more comfortable with it during the real appointment.

Reinforce good behavior at the dentist’s office by offering your child a surprise. Let them pick a movie to rent, cook their favorite dinner, or take them to the park. Just be careful to not offer the reward before the visit, this may make them think there is something to be afraid of.

People of all ages need routine visits to the dentist for examinations and cleanings. Helping someone become a little more familiar with the process will do a great deal of good for their oral health. To schedule your family’s appointments at Bensalem Family Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952. Are You Brushing for Two Minutes?

Brushing for two full minutes is about the amount of time you need to really get a good teeth cleaning. Many patients do not realize that they are really not hitting every spot. Timing yourself to two minutes helps greatly! Here at Bensalem Family Dentistry of Bensalem, PA, we want to give some tips to our patients on how to make sure you are brushing for two minutes.

Brushing your teeth may not be the most exciting moment of your day. However, brushing is vital to your oral and overall health. There are ways to make it fun while still keeping track of time.

Music

Play your favorite tune while brushing your teeth. Most music players have a timer on it as the song plays. Use it to make sure you are brushing for two minutes. Every thirty seconds brush a different quadrant of your mouth.

Phone

Phones can do so much these days! One of the simplest ways to keep track of two minutes is to set your phone’s stopwatch or timer!

Hourglass

A more fun way of watching time is with an hourglass! In this case, it would be more like a minute-glass. Just remember to flip a minute glass over one more time!

Fancy Toothbrushes

Many electric and manual toothbrushes have timers now! They either play music for two minutes or they stop their vibration a few times when you hit two minutes. Easy!

Remember that routine visits to your dentist are part of a healthy oral care routine. To schedule your appointment with Bensalem Family Dentistry of Bensalem, PA, call our office at (215) 638-9952. For more information about us, visit our website, www.bensalemfamilydentistry.com
