How to Care for Dentures

At Bensalem Dentistry, we are dedicated to helping our adult patients maintain their oral health as they transition through life. Receiving dentures is not a decision to be made lightly and we want to ensure our patients have an easy a time as possible adjusting by providing them with information on how they should change their hygiene habits.

Dentures should never be allowed to dry out. Keeping them in room-temperature (not hot) water or a cleaning solution overnight is necessary, but also presents its own challenges to keeping them clean. Patients must brush their entire denture, not just the parts shaped like teeth, using toothpaste specially made for dentures and a soft-bristled brush. Lacking any natural protections or the ability to repair themselves, dentures are more vulnerable than natural teeth to being scratched by minerals or hard bristles.

Taking dentures out at night will give patients’ gums a chance to relax. Before putting the dentures back in when they wake up, patients should brush their gums and tongue to prevent bacteria growth and stimulate blood flow. If they notice any problem with their dentures, they should seek repairs from a professional immediately. Patients should never attempt to adjust dentures on their own.
