Post-Extraction Care

Caring for and monitoring your mouth after an extraction facilitates a safe and healthy healing. Here at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we take post-extraction very seriously. We want our patients to be aware of how to properly take care of the extraction site for a smooth and quick recovery.

Depending on the complexity of the extraction, there may or may not be stitches at the extraction site. Either way, it is important to minimize bleeding. This will help the area heal faster. There are several things that should be avoided in order to slow down bleeding. Do not drink through a straw or lie flat as both of these activities could promote the un-clotting of blood. Also be careful when brushing around the extraction site; avoid the site altogether until it is healed.

Make sure to drink plenty of water and avoid smoking or using tobacco otherwise. Tobacco can slow down the healing process and promote an infection. Soft foods will also be needed for the day after the extraction. After that, solid foods may be added as it is comfortable.

For pain relief, a saltwater rinse may help, as well as taking painkillers as directed by your doctor. Take any antibiotics prescribed as directed to prevent infection.

Taking care of the extraction site is vital for a smooth healing process. For more information about post-extraction or post-op care, contact Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA by calling us at (215) 638-9952 or visiting our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com
